I am a sociologist and PhD candidate at Purdue University. Beginning in the fall of 2025, I will be Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Arkansas.

I study social inequality in the domains of family, work, and mental health. I am particularly interested in how gender, culture, and social psychological processes interlink with inequality in these domains.

Much of my current research examines how gendered cultural ideals about what it means to be a “good” parent reflect and reproduce inequality in work, family, and mental health. I am also interested in how parents renegotiate or refashion these gendered cultural ideals in ways that they interpret as aiming to reduce particular forms of inequality.

My research is methodologically versatile. I use experiments, qualitative interviews, longitudinal surveys, and mixed methods.

My teaching is grounded in a commitment to equitable pedagogy and active learning. I am passionate about connecting with students and facilitating an inclusive learning community where students experience confidence and belonging as we work collaboratively to expand our sociological imaginations.

More About Reilly

Outside of academia, I enjoy making pottery, rollerblading, hiking, listening to podcasts (especially Citations Needed, Bad Faith, the Ezra Klein Show, and Vibe Check), and seeing live music (some of my favorite shows have been Pinegrove, Half Waif, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Arm’s Length, Chase Petra, Florence & the Machine, and Elton John). I also love playing with my mischievous orange cat Rosco. I volunteered with Caregiver Companion in Lafayette, Indiana, for six years during graduate school.
